Hannah Coffin, our Development Manager, reviewed CUSWF's 2021 activities and upcoming 2022 events. CEO and entrepreneur Desmond Wheatley joined us to talk about our upcoming Gen-Z Global Forum on Sustainability on January 20th, 2022 and shared his inspiring vision.
Our supporter CEO and Founder Addis Boyd of the Sistas of Liberty Apparel joined us to introduce his mission to empower women of diversity.

Ryan Hass is a senior fellow and the Michael H. Armacost Chair in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings, where he holds a joint appointment to the John L. Thornton China Center and the Center for East Asia Policy Studies. He is also the Interim Chen-Fu and Cecilia Yen Koo Chair in Taiwan Studies. He was part of the inaugural class of David M. Rubenstein fellows at Brookings and is a nonresident affiliated fellow in the Paul Tsai China Center at Yale Law School. Hass focuses his research and analysis on enhancing policy development on the pressing political, economic, and security challenges facing the United States in East Asia.

We are honored to introduce the first program of its kind. The AACLF strives to curb the underrepresentation of African-Americans in all facets of U.S.-China relations.
We believe that supporting up-and-coming African-American professionals is key to enhancing the China space, improving U.S. national security and competitiveness, and better reflecting the diversity of the United States.
This 8-month mentoring program targets young African-American professionals who have demonstrated a strong interest in China either through formal study or time in country. We will pair program participants with successful African-American mentors with deep experience engaging with China in the following areas:
· International Government Affairs
· International Media & Journalism
· Advanced Academics
· International Trade & Economics
Qualifications
Applicants should be African-Americans who have:
· demonstrated commitment to developing a China-focused career
· a minimum of two years’ work experience (internships and volunteer work will be considered)
· studied and/or worked abroad in Greater China
· a strong focus and drive to achieve his/her career goals
· an interest in one of the fellowship areas
· Mandarin Chinese language skills

Randy Kennedy, Michael R. Klein Professor of Law, Harvard University, an author of six books and an expert on freedom of expression, race relations law, civil rights legislation and the Supreme Court, discusses the possible effects of COVID-19 on civil liberties with CUSWF Executive Director Leslie Wolf-Creutzfeldt.
Also joining the discussion is Mary White, Professor of Medical Humanities in Dept. of Population and Public Health Sciences, Boonshoft School of Medicine at Wright State University.

December 13, 2019 -- China is the only country that will have 1.6 billion smartphone subscribers by 2023. Today, it has access to 7.3 million apps in a country that is connected because 98% of China’s Internet users are mobile spending an average of 179.7 minutes per day on the mobile phone.
Chinese publishers met in New York to learn more about ways to achieve new book awareness, increase lead generation, increase sales revenues, increase website traffic, and improve data quality with related analytics. Our CDO who spent most of her career as a book publisher and marketer lectures on innovation in digital marketing.
November 20, 2019 -- CUSWF supported FortuneTimes Group and the W3C's SymposiumX bringing us the latest on Financial Innovation on the Web.
Founder and CEO of micropayment platform Coil, Stefan Thomas, gave an informative overview of the issues still to be solved to make financial payments with blockchain technology more efficient and how innovations in micropayments will help creators to be paid for their content.
November 20, 2019 -- CUSWF and SoGal members celebrated at their holiday event at Macy's in New York. Pocket Sun, the 27-year-old co-founder of multi-million dollar VC firm SoGal, wants to better gender dynamics.
SoGal is the largest global platform for the education and empowerment of diverse entrepreneurs and investors.
SoGal's mission is to close the diversity gap in entrepreneurship and venture capital.
November 19, 2019 -- China Institute screened the award-winning documentary China Love about the $80 billion pre-wedding photo industry by Australian documentary filmmaker Olivia Martin-McGuire. It was shown as part of a film series on the changing styles of love in China.
Following the screening, she was interviewed by Roseann Lake, a former Beijing correspondent and author of the bestselling book, “Leftover in China: The Women Shaping the World’s Next Superpower.”
November 13, 2019 -- An important panel on the business of aging in China at the China Institute. Senior citizens will account for nearly one-fifth of China’s population next year, and a third by 2050. Glenn Hassan, CFO & CBO, CANbridge, Joan Kaufman, China health expert and director for academics, Schwarzman Scholars, and Kevin Xie, president at Fosun Healthcare Holdings will explain how the aging trend is driving a massive shift in China’s economy, straining labor and healthcare resources—and fueling new businesses, from luxurious retirement communities to modern medical providers.
In November 2019, as part of our education component of the SAGE initiative, we will include financial literacy information that will empower women to take control of their finances. In this way, women can be more resilient and better able to handle challenges.
Issues like pay disparity, glass ceilings, parental leave need to be addressed both through laws but also by arming ourselves with knowledge and a support system.
October 23, 2019 -- CUSWF's CDO Lisa Faith Phillips was honored to be invited to present on the latest innovations in media with visiting Chinese publishers as part of the Strategic Planning and Change Management for Publishers conference at the SUNY Global Media Center.
She shared steps on how to build successful innovation processes, including learning from innovation in related fields and how to include the whole organization to ensure success.
October 21, 2019 -- CUSWF joined the Yicai Global New York Autumn Forum for their always fascinating panels of experts moderated by CUSWF board member Susan Yuqing Feng on the Future of Global Economies and Financial Markets at the Harvard Club.
The whole world needs to work together in order to survive, James Bacchus, Distinguished Professor of Global Affairs, Director of the Center for Global Economic and Environmental Opportunity at the University of Central Florida and former chairman of the Appellate Body of the World Trade Organization, said in his keynote speech.
August 11, 2019 -- CUSWF was inspired by The China Europe International Business School forum on digital opportunities in China.
Here with CEIBS Professor Byron Y. Lee who presented an exciting overview of the dynamic growth of digital and AI in China. From case-studies we learned how students and executives can study at this top-ranked business school in Shanghai to explore the exploding digital market opportunities.
August 1, 2019 -- CUSWF attended China Institute's informative panel discussion on U.S.-China Tech Battle. Andy Purdy, Chief Security Officer, Huawei Technologies USA, and U.S. security and tech experts discussed U.S.-China tech competition, the race for 5G, and the current U.S. government policy on Huawei Technologies, the world’s largest telecom equipment maker and China’s largest telephone-network equipment maker.
June 19, 2019 -- CUSWF friends and supports attended China Institute's screening of Out of Phoenix Bridge, the groundbreaking documentary from Li Hong, China’s first independent female documentary film-makers.
The film follows two years in the lives of four young women from the countryside who come to Beijing for jobs. In interviews and intimate footage, Hong elicits remarkably candid and complex testimony from her subjects as they frankly discuss their work, pressures from home, and experiences with men. A remarkable achievement, this touching film is a fascinating look at the lives of women whose experiences are rarely explored.
May 14, 2019 -- The China-U.S. Women's Foundation welcomed Dr. Tia Powell to a special event at CUSWF to talk about her excellent new book Dementia Remagined.
A special combination of smart, intimate writing that draws you in from the first pages as it moves from her powerful personal story through a riveting overview of the history and science of dementia. Dr. Powell ends with what we can do to create a better future for us and our loved ones as we all face this aging issue that will affect 50% of people 85 and over.
Can meaningful cooperation be unearthed between China and the United States? Could the trade war irreparably debilitate their long-held, economic partnership? How are the diplomatic differences between the two superpowers impacting economies domestically and globally?
CUSWF partnered with the South China Morning Post's China Conference: USA on December 10, 2019 in New York City to hear business leaders and government officials debate how the global economic, social and technological landscapes will evolve during this time of immense competition and disagreement, and attempt to establish a framework for rebuilding positive, albeit competitive, dialogue between them.
It brought together policymakers, business leaders, academics and entrepreneurs to share their views and vision on future growth and opportunities in the region.

We start with four topics: depression, chronic pelvic pain, fibromyalgia, and nutrition. The videos are available on our website and we will collaborate with schools, local governments and media outlets to reach a large audience in order to alert women about common conditions and give them the necessary tools to find solutions.
