There's much to share. Here are highlights of some of our recent news and events.

Wonderful turnout for CUSWF Holiday Party on Tuesday, December 14th 2021

CUSWF Celebrated the Holidays!

Thank you all who joined us for a fun-filled virtual CUSWF Holiday Party on December 14th 2021.  We have so much to be grateful for...especially you! 


We were excited to see old and new friends.  We started with cocktails and toasts and songs from our special guest the delightful singer Jillian Steward (JJ Sings) who entertained us with her beautiful rendition of songs in Chinese. You can enjoy her enchanting performances on Youtube. 


Hannah Coffin, our Development Manager, reviewed CUSWF's 2021 activities and upcoming 2022 events.  CEO and entrepreneur Desmond Wheatley joined us to talk about our upcoming Gen-Z Global Forum on Sustainability on January 20th, 2022 and shared his inspiring vision.   


Our supporter CEO and Founder Addis Boyd of the  Sistas of Liberty Apparel joined us to introduce his mission to empower women of diversity.


The party ended with a festive raffle with an array of exciting prizes. Thank you Jeremy Willinger from China Institute for the prize of a year membership to the China Institute with their great events and classes,  Addis Boyd of the Sistas of Liberty Apparel for raffling a charming illustrated t-shirt, and Tito's Vodka.

Ryan Hass is a senior fellow and the Michael H. Armacost Chair in the Foreign Policy program at Brookings, where he holds a joint appointment to the John L. Thornton China Center and the Center for East Asia Policy Studies. He is also the Interim Chen-Fu and Cecilia Yen Koo Chair in Taiwan Studies. He was part of the inaugural class of David M. Rubenstein fellows at Brookings and is a nonresident affiliated fellow in the Paul Tsai China Center at Yale Law School. Hass focuses his research and analysis on enhancing policy development on the pressing political, economic, and security challenges facing the United States in East Asia.

The African-American China Leadership Fellowship

We are honored to introduce the first program of  its kind. The AACLF strives to curb the underrepresentation of African-Americans in all facets of U.S.-China relations. 

We believe that supporting  up-and-coming African-American professionals is key to enhancing   the China space, improving U.S. national security and   competitiveness, and better reflecting the diversity of the United States. 


This 8-month mentoring program targets young African-American professionals who have demonstrated a strong interest in China either through formal study or time in country.  We will pair program participants with successful African-American mentors with deep experience   engaging with China in the following areas:


· International Government Affairs

· International Media & Journalism

· Advanced Academics

· International Trade & Economics

   


Qualifications

Applicants should be African-Americans who have:

· demonstrated commitment to developing a China-focused   career

· a minimum of two years’ work experience (internships and   volunteer work will be considered)

· studied and/or worked abroad in Greater China

· a strong focus and drive to achieve his/her career goals

· an interest in one of the fellowship areas

· Mandarin Chinese language skills

November 19, 2019 -- China Institute screened the award-winning documentary China Love about the $80 billion pre-wedding photo industry by Australian documentary filmmaker Olivia Martin-McGuire. It was shown as part of a film series on the changing styles of love in China.

 

Following the screening, she was interviewed by Roseann Lake, a former Beijing correspondent and author of the bestselling book, “Leftover in China: The Women Shaping the World’s Next Superpower.”

In November 2019, as part of our education component of the SAGE initiative, we will include financial literacy information that will empower women to take control of their finances.  In this way, women can be more resilient and better able to handle challenges. 


Issues like pay disparity, glass ceilings, parental leave need to be addressed both through laws but also by arming ourselves with knowledge and a support system.

 June 19, 2019 -- CUSWF friends and supports attended China Institute's screening of Out of Phoenix Bridge,  the groundbreaking documentary from Li Hong, China’s first independent female documentary film-makers. 


 The film follows two years in the lives of four young women from the countryside who come to Beijing for jobs. In interviews and intimate footage, Hong elicits remarkably candid and complex testimony from her subjects as they frankly discuss their work, pressures from home, and experiences with men. A remarkable achievement, this touching film is a fascinating look at the lives of women whose experiences are rarely explored.

    CUSWF Launches New Video Series -- Two Things You Need To Know About Your Health

    NEW YORK, September 12, 2018 -- CUSWF launched a new health video series, Two Things You Need To Know About Your Health. Dr. Melinda Wolf teaches women how to monitor their symptoms and advocate to get proper treatments and relief from suffering. 


    We start with four topics: depression, chronic pelvic pain, fibromyalgia,  and nutrition.  The videos are available on our website and we will collaborate with schools, local governments and media outlets to reach a large audience in order to alert women about common conditions and give them the necessary tools to find solutions.

    NEW YORK, May 30, 2019 -- CUSWF celebrated the launch of entrepreneur Che Jianxin's book Work Is Life: How to Perform to the Best of Your Ability and the inauguration of the Chinese Entrepreneurs Series books, co-published by the China National Publications Import & Export Corporation (CNPIEC) and the New York-based Pace University Press, at Book Expo.  


    The English-language book, “Work Is Life — How to Perform to the Best of Your Ability”, tells how the author Che Jianxin fought his way from a village carpenter to the chairman and CEO of China’s largest furniture retail chain.

      

    Huang Ping, the Chinese consul general in New York, lauded Chinese entrepreneurs as trailblazers and pioneers in China's economic and trade cooperation with the rest of the world.
