China-U.S. Women’s Foundation Hosts the First Annual Generation-Z Global Forum
Gen-Z Global Forum on Thursday, October 15, 2020
*For Immediate Release
NEW YORK, October 15, 2020: The China-U.S.Women’s Foundation (CUSWF), a leading women’s advocacy platform, today hosts the first Annual Gen Z Global Forum. The special event will highlight issues relevant to Generation Z, the 72 million people born between 1995 and 2010. Gen Z issues to be discussed at the Forum in a multi-media format include the impact of virtual learning, Gen Z and mental health, the intersectionality of race across fields of study, and the hapa (mixed ethnic) experience.
Leslie Wolf-Creutzfeldt, Executive Director, CUSWF, said, “The Gen-Z Global Forum is an outgrowth of the China-US Women’s Foundation’s education programs designed to empower students with financial and communications literacy in order to make sense of their world. We are dedicated to helping Gen Z articulate the issues that concern them and find solutions and strategies for a better future.”
The first hour will be a combination of pre-filmed and live discussion, immediately followed by a "cocktail hour" beginning at 5 pm. Wellesley Professors Quinn Slobodian (History) and Mingwei Song (Chinese) will be featured in the second hour following the presentations and the audience will have a chance to mingle and share their ideas.
According to Mingxi Xu, Founding Board Member of CUSWF, “Gen Z’s concerns about their future is a shared global experience transcending politics and geography. CUSWF will showcase issues and solutions that can help young people to not just survive but to thrive.”
Gen-Z Global Forum Topics
Impact of Virtual Learning
COVID-19 completely changed the face of K-12 and higher education. In a matter of weeks, the vast majority of students went from attending class in the classroom or lecture hall to a fully virtual model, with zoom rooms or Google Hangouts. What do Gen-Zers think of this online shift? Will “Zoom school” become the new norm or will Gen Z be itching to return to the physical classroom?
Gen Z and Mental Health
Mental health has always been an important topic among Gen-Zers. The demographic has experienced higher rates of anxiety and depression, making it more likely that members of this group struggle with mental health. As COVID-19 shut down college campuses, closed K-12 schools, and made “working from home” the new norm, mental health awareness has never been more important.
The Hapa Experience
With 6% of Americans identifying as Asian American, a new generation of dual identities has been steadily increasing. Included in that experience is the “Hapa” or the half Asian experience. We will share stories of the Hapa experience, as well as discuss how the Hapa faced and responded to the recent incidents of racial bias towards Asians due COVID-19.
How Race Intersects College Curriculums
As the students of our nation's colleges and universities continue to diversify, the fields we choose do not always reflect these changes. Gen-Z are aware of this imbalance as we are keenly aware of the importance of diversity in the school and workplace. We will explore what this means for Gen-Zers as we discuss the intersectionality of race across the different fields of study.

NEW YORK, January 17, 2019: China-U.S. Women’s Foundation (CUSWF) announced today a partnership with The Jed Foundation (JED) to provide CUSWF members with access to JED’s programming and resources in order to raise awareness about mental health issues among Chinese Americans, Chinese students in America and audiences in China that may not be familiar with mental health issues. Over 19 million people in the United States identify as Asian-American and of that population, more than 13% were diagnosed with a mental illness in the past year. Asian-Americans report fewer mental health conditions than their white counterparts due to issues including language barriers, stigma, and lack of awareness of resources and mental health services. Studies show that Asian-Americans are three times less likely than their white counterparts to seek treatment for their mental health concerns.
In 2016, there were over half a million Chinese students studying abroad, with more than 300,000 of them based in the United States. A survey by Yale researchers found that 45 percent of Chinese international students on campus reported symptoms of depression, and 29 percent reported symptoms of anxiety.
Leslie Wolf-Creutzfeldt, Executive Director of the China-U.S. Women’s Foundation, explained, “As a leading organization dedicated to empowering women and connecting them to issues and topics of concern, we are pleased to partner with JED to promote discussion about mental health among our members and audiences both in the United States and China. Unfortunately, mental health still is not adequately understood and talked about and by working with JED, we are confident that our members will access a wide assortment of materials and information that can help alleviate suffering and increase quality of life.”
“Approximately half of all young adults with a mental health condition are not receiving adequate treatment, and mental health support tends to be underfunded among even the best colleges and universities,” said Dr. Victor Schwartz, Chief Medical Officer, JED. “By working with the China-U.S. Women’s Foundation, we believe we can help more people, especially international students and professionals both here in the U.S. and in China.”
